"-omics sciences" and "deep learning and the future of care" are now public (but in Italian only, for the time being)

You might remember our announcement from a few months ago about our partners' contribution to the Master ARTE (artificial intelligence and telemedicine) of the University of Parma.

The lectures contributed then as part of the program have been held under embargo to give enrolled students a reasonable advance access to content... However they are now offered to everyone in keeping with our spirit. We are glad to share the videos here below for your evaluation:

Lowering barriers to bottom-up innovation and collaboration is more important than optimizing perfomances/efficiency

I have recently read this twitter post by John Carlos Baez and immediately something else came to my mind: the piece "The counter-intuitive rise of Python in scientific computing" arguing that if one tool (python in the specific case) feels arguably technically inferior to alternatives, especially in the hands of power users, then we must still reckon with the fact that it has become the de facto most common/popular language in scientific computing and data sciences. How is this possible, despite remaining quite puzzling to technicians, is a secret hidden in plain sight: we are talking of a tool that enormously lowers the barriers to access, and makes it rather easy to focus on exploration, reuse, and composition of preexisting work, despite at the cost of some performances and elegance, thus attracting all those users whose mission is not to specifically challenge and develop tools, but to use them in applied fields with their own very specialised knowledge/expertise to be kept up to date and integrated.

How is this interesting to us in ISOMERISM? We have to learn to navigate the proper shades of interdisciplinary collaboration if we are to be successful in the digitalisation of medicine. Technical elegance and performance optimisation should be the focus of those elements of the value chain that can 1) be relegated to the infrastructures, hiding away the need for hardcore specialised skills from users AND 2) be relegated to those elements of the value chain whose uncertainty within the system is limited/nihil (e.g. execution of computation, I/O, data preservation, energy optimisation, ...)
All other layers (more visible to the human stakeholders, whether care givers or patients) should be progressively more and more nuanced in the negotiation between technology focus and users' freedom, embracing the necessity to accept sub-optimality in order to accomodate uncertainty and evolution... and failure of the system, with the ensuing social actions needed to correct the trajectory. Composability and reuse, with low entry barriers, become a priority in such a sociotechnical infostructure, as success is not definable as technical compliance, but only evaluated on the meaning of the results produced by the interactions emerging within and around the system.

The EU Commission has usually favoured highly technical agendas, however some initiatives (i.e. PerMedCoE ) appear to have captured the gist of the reflection I just shared, at least judging by their early ventures, bringing fresh air in the landscape of platforms development for medicine... we will follow them to learn more, hoping to have found new allies

Meaningful human control of autonomous systems

A few days ago Dr Marco Manca joined an online informal seminar/conversation hosted by the Edgeryders about the topic of meaningful human control of autonomous systems, largely inspired by Dr Manca's contribution to the activities of NATO STO HFM-330 but touching on the wider issues of how to understand current machine learning and the potentials and pitfalls of its deployment across most sectors of human enterprise.

We believe this might be of interest to many, and we are pleased to hereby share a recording of the meeting. We further invite you to join the conversation online hosted by the Edgeryders

SCImPULSE Foundation presented about Deep Learning adoption in healthcare at ARTE!

You might already know that our parent entity, the Italian Society of Telemedicine, is patronizing the 1st level Master on ARtificial intelligence and TElemedicine "ARTE" hosted by the University of Parma.

Today, the Board of Directors of SCImPULSE Foundation decided to overreach, and each member of the Board offered a lecture on the subject, from the point of view of their unique professional expertise... what's even better, they decided to license it under the Creative Commons "Attribution" 4.0 licence, so we are able to share the recordings with you, and really anyone interested:

TELEMEDICINE AND PHARMACIES: BACK TO THE FUTURE

PRESS RELEASE

TELEMEDICINE AND PHARMACIES: BACK TO THE FUTURE

SIT Società Italiana di Telemedicina

NATIONAL CONFERENCE

TELEMEDICINE: PRESENT AND FUTURE

22 – 23 October 2021

Today, Friday October 22, and tomorrow, Saturday 23, The annual national conference of the Italian Society of Telemedicine (SIT) is taking place. It puts together all the competences that can help develop telemedicine.

Among the most interesting panels offered by SIT, there is “P.N.R.R (National Recovery Plan) and promotion of community healthcare. Let’s start by betworking what is there and works well already: pharmacies, doctors’ offices, and home care cooperatives” SIT Region Puglia symposium, with the contribution of Cardio On Line Europe. At the heart of the discussion, the role of pharmacies in the new, post-pandemic medicine.

The speakers have highlighted the fundamental role that Italian pharmacies have played in the relationship between citizens and medicine during the pandemic. The network of Italian pharmacies is a fundamental service in the Local Healthcare System, which create a serious and continuing dialogue with the institutions and the state. When the pharmacies become a veritable health centre, they must be thought of differently: many useful and crucial services for citizens – starting with COVID testing – are already a reality and Italian pharmacies are the best platform for the development of telemedicine. Experimentation must however turn into reality, also thanks to the vision given by the PNNR (National recovery fund)’s funding. Cooperation and coproduction is ever more crucial, desired both by Doctors and Pharmacists, which will allow the involvement of a wider healthcare area among which community nurses. The pharmacy as a service hub can become a crossroads of different professional disciplines, in which each one takes on their role’s responsibilities, working together efficiently with the others. Post-Covid, it is already a reality for Covid tests and vaccines.

TELEMEDICINA E FARMACIE: RITORNO AL FUTURO

SIT Società Italiana di Telemedicina

CONGRESSO NAZIONALE

LA TELEMEDICINA: PRESENTE E FUTURO

22 – 23 OTTOBRE 2021

MOVING BEYOND THE SILO LOGIC THROUGH STANDARDIZATION

 PRESS RELEASE

SIT: MOVING BEYOND THE SILO LOGIC THROUGH STANDARDIZATION

SIT Società Italiana di Telemedicina

NATIONAL CONFERENCE

LA TELEMEDICINA: PRESENTE E FUTURO

22 – 23 OCTOBER 2021

Today, Friday October 22, and tomorrow, Saturday 23, The annual national conference of the Italian Society of Telemedicine (SIT) is taking place. It puts together all the competences that can help develop telemedicine.

Among the most innovative panels offered by SIT there is “Home care and the future of healthcare for the treatment of chronic illness and COVID”.

The speakers have highlighted the fundamental role of telemedicine and the PNRR’s (National recovery plan) initiatives. There are many concrete proposals, among which the need to put together data and information. In order to achieve that, a high standardisation of data, processes, and telemedicine platforms is needed. It is only in this way that we can manage to leave the “Silos logic”, as the Minister of Health Roberto Speranza has put it.

Among the speakers, M. Bonomini has reminded how “contact does heal”, and therefore technology and telemedicine are great, without forgetting the fundamental duties of care. M. Cipolla has further proposed an integrated telemedicine project to overcome territorial chronicities: “COVID has taught us that we must be ready to change, while guaranteeing democracy of care. Sustainability, that is to say, the right cost of the system, taking charge of everyone, and attention to the territorial chronicities – these are the guidelines for the future. From the presented data it emerges how a good organization of territorial telemedicine, as envisioned by the PNRR, can have immediate and measurable effects on reductions in hospital admissions, as well as improvements on quality of life, and treatment of diseases.

Telemedicine’s approaches stand between innovation and tradition, aiming towards the personalization and humanization of medicine, as true paragons of the future’s medicine.

SIT: USCIRE DALLA LOGICA DEI SILOS CON LA STANDARDIZZAZIONE

SIT Società Italiana di Telemedicina

CONGRESSO NAZIONALE

LA TELEMEDICINA: PRESENTE E FUTURO

22 – 23 OTTOBRE 2021
